Does it pay?
X is full of people explaining how they make $10,000 a month. We take each scheme, do the sums, read what happened to people who tried it, and show our sources.
Our X account, @does_it_pay, is automated. For now it replies only when we tag it ourselves under a tweet.

43 schemesSelling AI-made video ads to brands
Brands do buy AI-made ads: one agency lists retainers from EUR 4,000 a month. Those documented earning at that level had ad, film or agency careers first; newcomers are visible only at low marketplace prices, and none is proven at the claimed $10,000 a month.
Autonomous AI agents that earn for you
We found no verified case of a bought agent fleet earning by itself. In published tests, agents left alone made between nothing and about $200. The verified money goes to a few people selling tools, set-ups or teaching to agent users.
Copy trading
Copy trading reliably pays platforms and referrers, and a few copied traders with large followings. About half of copier outcomes in one 90-day study were positive; $14,000 in a week takes about $570,000 at one large lead trader’s latest month, $3 million at 2% monthly.
Selling content on fan subscription platforms
Pays a small share of creators: those who bring followers from elsewhere and sell in private messages daily. OnlyFans paid about $102 a month per creator account, dormant ones included, in the year to November 2025; a verified $143,000 in 2021 ranked top 0.46%.
Day trading for a living
A few do profit reliably: in Taiwan’s full records under 1% of day traders beat their costs again the following year, and they are heavy, experienced specialists. In Brazil, 97% of new day traders who persisted 300 days lost money.
Etsy digital downloads
It pays a minority who make original, useful files for a niche they know: a few hundred dollars a month after a year, $1,000 or more for the best. Keeping $1,000 a month takes about 245 orders at $5 a file, or 76 at $15.
Selling physical goods on Etsy
Etsy pays a minority of makers who have a product buyers search for and a margin left after fees: about 10% of an ordinary US order, up to 24.5% through Etsy’s offsite ads. The average active shop sold about $1,870 in 2025, before costs.
Faceless AI theme pages on Instagram and TikTok
A few operators with a viral hit and their own AI videos say they make $2,000 to $5,000 a month, none checked against payment records. Platform pay mostly starts at 1,000 to 10,000 followers, and no data shows how many pages get there.
Freelancing and productised services
Freelancing pays people who already have a skill businesses buy; the few documented successes we found took years, not 90 days. Most profiles opened on freelance sites never win a job (about 12 in 100 had, in a 2021 count that includes abandoned accounts).
Get-paid-to and rewards apps
Established reward apps pay pocket money: Freecash says most users earn a few dollars to about $50 a month. The “$100 for signing up” sites in the tweets use web addresses registered in 2026; we found no evidence that they pay.
High-ticket coaching and personal brand offers
Pays people with a skill clients already pay thousands for, plus an audience or referrals. $30,000 a month at $5,000 a sale needs about 38 booked calls at the rates sellers pitch. Of surveyed coaches, 53% took in under $30,000 a year from coaching (2022).
Remote closing and appointment setting
Job posts offer experienced closers with a full calendar about 10% of sales, so $10,000 a month takes $100,000 collected; pay received is unmeasured. One beginner role says 200 cold calls a day earn $3,000 a month or more, and some earn nothing.
Memecoin and speculative token trading
Most wallets win or lose small sums; in the best month 5.4% showed realised gains over $1,000. Tracked wallets with five-figure days traded $1 million to $4 million a month. A newcomer’s fees on a small coin are about 4.4% per round trip (our estimate).
Newsletters and email lists
Paid newsletters pay specialists with an audience readers will pay to follow: among beehiiv newsletters that charge, the median turns 0.62% of readers into payers, about $62 a month per 1,000 subscribers before fees. The biggest tweet figures come from selling courses or services.
Paid communities and courses
Pays people who already have an audience or a trade others will pay to learn. Among about 15,900 paid Skool communities one tracker follows, the median could take at most $1,202 a month, and real takings run well below that.
Platform referral programs
Referring businesses pays those who land big sellers: Whop’s ten top partners got about $34,000 to $75,000 each in 30 days. $1,000 a month needs roughly $90,000 to $230,000 of referred monthly sales. Promoting products to buyers takes an audience; no earnings are published.
Print on demand
Pays a minority of unknown size who find a narrow niche through Etsy’s search after testing hundreds of listings; every large success we could date began in 2020 to 2022. At $5 to $18 profit an order, $1,000 a month needs 55 to 190 orders.
Reselling and flipping physical goods
Reselling pays people who run it as a job with stock and product knowledge: one solo reseller’s press-checked sales were nearly $123,800 in a year, before costs. Among all online sellers in 2018 bank data, mostly occasional, over half took in under $60 a month.
Selling custom GPTs, AI agents and agent tools
Custom GPTs are scheduled to retire on 11 December 2026. Tool stores pay programmers who maintain many tools: on Apify the median developer had 5 users in 30 days; about 6% had enough to suggest $1,000 a month. Client work pays those who find clients.
SEO services for clients
A real trade. The typical freelance SEO worker in one survey earns $58,000 a year; payment-verified agencies show $45,000 to $161,000 of monthly recurring revenue. It pays people with SEO skill and a way to find clients: referrals, a marketplace profile or an audience.
SEO niche sites and blogging
Content sites pay a few owners with years of work, first-hand material and an audience beyond Google: of 1,206 sites a broker vetted and sold since 2014, 66 netted $10,000+ a month. Bulk AI pages made only to rank risk removal from Google.
Trading signal and call groups
In most studies, followers who held called coins for days lost on average; the exceptions are a skilled 28% of stock tipsters, some small accounts and automated trading within the hour. Callers collect the money, yet about 80% of Whop trading products earn nothing.
Social media marketing agency
A real service business that pays people with a proven marketing skill who sell daily for months. About 14% of US advertising firms without staff, any age, took in $100,000 or more in 2023, about the same as other trades; 60% took in under $25,000.
Sports betting picks and tipsters
Most tracked tip services make no profit at flat stakes (127 of 165 in one 2026 count); the most favourable dataset averages 3.97% on stakes, so $1,000 a month needs about $25,000 in bets. Sellers are paid either way; winners bet on price with capital.
TikTok Shop affiliate videos
It pays people who film real products they hold: one part-timer reports $19,069 of commission in her first year. $10,000 a month needs about 2,700 orders a month at typical rates, and we found no AI-avatar affiliate with published or verified earnings.
UGC creator brand deals
Brands do pay people with no following, about $40 to $150 a job on marketplaces. A couple of thousand dollars a month takes 13 to 50 approved jobs every month, which only a few long-term creators show; on Whop, about 2 million views.
Vending machines
Vending pays people who win busy locations and run many machines. Of 21,746 US vending businesses with no employees, about 8% had sales of $100,000 or more in 2023; about half had under $10,000. Three average snack machines take in $930 to $1,400 monthly.
Dropshipping
Dropshipping pays operators with an edge and capital: seven broker-checked stores show yearly profit of $48,000 to $698,000, and the four run on paid adverts keep 15% to 22% of sales. At median advert costs a first order breaks even at best, before overheads.
Ghostwriting for founders
Pays writers who know a field well enough to win and keep a few founders: the one detailed solo case (self-reported) reports $9,000 to $12,000 a month from six clients, four years in. Nobody has measured how many beginners win a client.
Prop firm funded trading
Pays a minority: about one starter in six got any payout at Topstep in 2025 (our estimate), and 7% in a ten-firm dataset. One payout is usually hundreds to low thousands of dollars, before fees. Repeat payouts appear to need a real trading edge.
Affiliate marketing
Affiliate programmes can pay people who already have an audience, or who spend years building one. $10,000 a month at 30% of a $50 product takes about 667 paying customers every month. In one software vendor’s data, 1.28% of sign-ups made a sale.
AI automation agencies
This pays people who can build and who find clients in an industry they know. Of 43 established n8n partner firms, 42 say they accept no project under $1,000; one job board’s average bid was $102. Nobody publishes how many newcomers get a client.
AI influencers
It pays a few skilled makers of original, openly artificial characters: contest nominees report $1,500 to $4,500 a month from their personas for full-time work. At $1 to $2 per 1,000 views, $1,000 a month needs 500,000 to 1 million views.
Airbnb rental arbitrage
It can pay operators with the landlord’s written consent, a city that allows it, $8,000 to $22,000 per unit and bookings well above twice the rent. Per-unit figures run from a loss to about $2,000 a month, so $20,000 means ten or more leases.
Selling on Amazon with FBA
Pays a minority: sellers who last for years and can fund stock and advertising. About half of surveyed sellers sold $1,000 a month or less. At the 10% to 20% margins that surveyed sellers report, “$25k a month profit” needs $125,000 to $250,000 of sales every month (our estimate).
Self-publishing AI-written books on Amazon
Self-publishing on Amazon pays people with a catalogue, one or two hits, an advert budget and years; most checked successes were not AI-written. Newcomers should expect little at first: about 80% of surveyed authors with one to three books reported under $100 a month.
Paid content clipping
The $1 per 1,000 views is real, but a new account’s clip usually earns $1 to $3 or nothing. It pays clippers whose clips reach tens of thousands of views: top-three results over $1,000 had medians of about 130 clips and 61,000 views a clip.
Selling digital products direct to an audience
Selling a PDF or template you made pays people who bring their own buyers: an audience, an email list or expertise buyers trust. Of Gumroad sellers who sold anything in 2020, the middle one made $70 that year and about 4% made $10,000 or more.
Faceless YouTube channels
Faceless channels pay a small group well: 20 broker-checked channels listed for sale show a median profit of $4,423 a month, most made with paid freelancers. Even among small channels adding 52 or more videos a year, about seven in ten miss 1,000 subscribers.
Cold outreach agencies
A real service. The founders who report doing well had run a business or sold before and knew one group of buyers well. The one payment-verified agency under a year old took $41,069 in eleven months; larger sums are unverified or took years.
Small software products built alone
It pays a minority: builders who already reach their buyers, keep their customers and keep at it for years. About 1 in 22 subscription apps that charge reaches $10,000 a month within two years; the median earns about $72 a month after a year.
Polymarket trading bots
It pays programmers whose bots have an edge and bet millions, keeping about 2 cents per dollar; the one small operator’s wallet we checked kept $5,786 in nine months. In one nine-day count after fees, 34.4% of bot-run wallets finished ahead, against 37.8% of others.
AI and automated trading bots
Bot profits are real but go mostly to firms and funded operators with coding skill, low fees and years of record. Of year-old public trading pools on Hyperliquid, run by bot or by hand, 36.7% are in profit and the middle one is down 30.7% (our count from a third-party data file).
