Own-brand peptide and GLP-1 stores

Also sold as “Building a peptide brand”

VerdictLegal route needs licences

The web-store route in the tweet sells what the FDA calls illegal unapproved drugs: small stores for sale report $3,000 to $16,000 a month profit, and face warning letters, lost card processing and, rarely, prison. The prescription route needs doctors, a pharmacy and large-scale advertising.

The claim“Peptide brand to 7 figures”

From one thread, 6 October 2026. The FDA says selling GLP-1 peptides labelled 'for research' is illegal.

The claim

If you want to make money online, not sure why you wouldn’t sell peptides.

What do you think will sell better? A GLP or a fidget toy from Ali express?

Here’s how to build a peptide brand to 7 figures

THREAD

@King_Lou_IV, 3,023 views when collected1

The thread advises a “research focused” website with disclaimers, and gives no price, cost or legal status12. The page judges the scheme, not the person who tweeted.

The sums

A peptide is a short chain of amino acids. GLP-1 drugs such as semaglutide are prescription peptides used for weight loss22. The thread describes a web store selling vials labelled “for research use only”2.

“Seven figures” means at least $1,000,000; we take it as a year’s sales1. One lab’s price table for retatrutide, a peptide still in trials and not approved for anything22, shows two US-facing resellers charging $4.79 and $6.40 per milligram and six suppliers, mostly in China, charging $0.60 to $1.233. These are its top-rated vendors, not a sample3. So a 10 mg vial costs about $6 to $12 and sells for about $48 to $64 (our sums from3). Then $1,000,000 takes 43 to 57 vials a day (our estimate from3).

After product, card fees, a share for affiliates (people paid to promote the product) and an assumed $5 of shipping, a $55 vial leaves about $28 to $33 (our estimate, from311541920).

The margin is not the hard part. Card payments, finding customers and the law are, and the law decides the rest.

What happens to most people who try

We found no data on what share of these stores earn anything.

The US drug regulator, the FDA, says selling GLP-1 products with a “research” label is illegal22. It sent warning letters to five online peptide stores in August 2026, by two law firms’ count2627. A warning letter is the regulator’s statement, not a court finding.

Enforcement is uneven. Public Citizen, a consumer group, counted 14 FDA warning letters to sellers of one peptide since 2024; in May 2026, 11 of those companies were still advertising unapproved peptides5.

Payments are a second problem. One processor that serves peptide businesses states: “We do not support research-use-only (RUO) peptide sellers.”10

Prison is the rare outcome29. One store’s owner was sentenced in July 2026 to 70 months, and CBS News reports that he admitted the store forged lab certificates2829.

Some stores do make money; see below.

The upside

Research-store route. Three small stores for sale on Flippa, a marketplace for online businesses, show monthly profit of $3,103 and $3,091 for two US stores and about US$16,000 for one selling to Australian customers (our conversion)727374. These are sellers’ listings, not audited accounts, and stores put up for sale are not a fair sample; all three owners are selling within 8 to 12 months727374. That is a realistic good result, with the legal exposure attached. One larger Flippa seller claims sales running at about $22 million a year nine months after launch, unverified54.

Prescription route. A licensed clinician prescribes, a licensed pharmacy makes the drug to order (compounding), and the brand owner runs the website and adverts64. MEDVi, started by one founder with about $20,000, reported $401 million of revenue and $65 million of profit in 202563. A newspaper checked those figures; they are not audited, and we could not open its article6364.

This route is legal with the right licences, but under pressure. In March 2026 the FDA announced warning letters to 30 telehealth companies (sellers of medical care over the internet) over how they marketed compounded GLP-1 drugs; one fault it named was branding the drug with the firm’s own name33. Pharmacies could copy semaglutide freely while it was in shortage; that ended in 202569.

For a newcomer, our year-one estimate is a few hundred thousand dollars of revenue with little or no profit: a guess from38 and41, not a measurement.

What it takes to compete

On the legal route, those who succeed have:

The research-store route is cheap to start: one freelancer builds a store for $8,00058. Staying open depends on not being the next seller that regulators, card networks or drug makers (who have sued sellers) act against54430.

How to tell early: can you name the licensed prescriber and pharmacy behind each sale? If not, you are on the route the FDA calls illegal22.

Who else makes money from it

The thread points to nothing for sale2. Money goes to suppliers3; payment processors, about 7% of sales at one large store by its own listing54; and affiliates, typically 10% of each sale1920.

Every regulator and court action we found was against sellers, not those who taught or supplied them.
