The claim

“Digital products are the easiest products to sell on Etsy to make 30k+/month”

This page judges the scheme, not the people who tweeted. A digital download is a file the buyer pays for and downloads straight away: a printable (a page to print at home, such as a planner), a spreadsheet or a template to edit.

The sums

Etsy charges a US seller 6.5% of the price, 3% plus $0.25 for payment processing, and $0.20 per listing, charged again after each sale on our reading of its policy²³.

These are our estimates for one-item orders, with no ads, before tools, tax and the seller’s time²³. About $5 is our typical price, from one weak sample of 66 listings with a median (middle) price of $4.64⁶.

The table leaves out one fee. Etsy advertises sellers’ items on other sites and takes a further cut of orders that come through those ads: 15% from smaller shops, which can opt out, and 12% from any shop that has sold $10,000 in any 365 days, which can never opt out again²⁴. A shop keeping $1,000 a month at $5 sells about $14,700 a year (our estimate), so it crosses that line²⁴.

“30k+/month” is about 7,360 orders a month at $5 if it means money kept, or 6,000 if sales (our estimate)¹. One shop came close in sales in 2025, on our estimate from its public sales count⁶⁷. A research tool places it in the top 0.1% of Etsy shops⁶⁸. So the figure is reachable for a very few; the evidence contradicts the word “easiest”.

What happens to most people who try

Nobody publishes outcome statistics for digital sellers. A company that sells software tools counted Etsy shops of every kind in July 2026: 26.2% had any recorded item sale in about 30 days, and the shop ahead of 99 in 100 sold 179 items¹⁰. The roughly 245 orders a month needed to keep $1,000 at $5 is above that mark (our estimate)¹⁰. This is a rough guide: the company does not describe its method, and the count mixes all kinds of shop and counts items, not orders¹⁰.

Sellers’ own accounts, none checked against payment records, follow one pattern. A Reddit seller’s 14-month log runs from $0 to $623 a month, averaging $239 by the poster’s total; 5 of 34 products made about 70% of revenue³². Comments, read once on a copy of Reddit we could not re-open, suggest the figures date from 2023-24³². The first months are close to zero, a few listings carry the shop, and sales take a year or more to reach a few hundred dollars a month⁸³².

The upside

People do make real money at this, though no income figure for a digital shop is confirmed by documents.

• A shop whose sales count can be checked. TheWeeklyCrew sells budget spreadsheets from under 50 listings⁶⁷. The sales count on its Etsy page, read in archived copies, gives about 119 sales a day from January 2025 to April 2026 (our division)⁶⁷. At an assumed $5.50 to $8 a sale, that is roughly $20,000 to $29,000 a month in sales, before fees (our estimate)⁶⁷. We do not know whether it used ads or an outside audience⁶⁷. Sales later slowed to about 65 a day (our division)⁶⁷⁶⁸.
• The best case in the press. CNBC reported that Rachel Jimenez’s printables shop brought in nearly $160,000 in 2021, more than $110,000 in 2022 and $77,000 in 2023¹⁵¹⁶¹⁷. These are her own figures, for sales, not profit¹⁵.

A realistic good result (our estimate), for a competent person who designs original files in a narrow subject and adds listings steadily at 5 to 10 hours a week: little or nothing for the first three to six months²⁸³², and a few hundred dollars a month in sales by the end of the first year³²³⁹. $1,000 a month in the first two years is a good outcome; in the sellers’ own accounts we found, it came with an expert’s 350 listings or with prior experience²²²⁷.

What it takes to compete

• A product that does a job. The strongest shops sell working budget spreadsheets, clinical notes for therapists (sold mostly to the seller’s own audience), or event sign-up sheets²²³⁷⁶⁷.
• Original work. Etsy does not accept bundles of someone else’s work⁴⁰.
• Time before pay. One writer’s own estimates, with no data shown, come to 240 to 360 hours of unpaid work before GBP 500 a month³⁹. Most of the documented winners started between 2018 and 2022¹⁵³⁸⁶⁸.

To tell early (our suggestions): name a specific group of buyers and the problem your file solves. After 20 to 30 listings and three months, if 1% to 5% of visits buy (Etsy’s guideline, as a seller-software company reports it), the product works⁷. Flat near zero after six months of steady listing is a sign to change niche or stop.

Who else makes money from it

Etsy is paid on every listing and every sale, whether or not the seller profits²⁵.

CNBC, which does not say it reviewed documents, reported in July 2022 that a course co-founder’s own Etsy shop “brings in $1,000 per month”, while her company, which also sold other courses, brought in $1 million in 2021²¹.
