Prop firm funded trading

Also sold as “Funded trader challenges”

VerdictPays a small minority

Pays a minority: about one starter in six got any payout at Topstep in 2025 (our estimate), and 7% in a ten-firm dataset. One payout is usually hundreds to low thousands of dollars, before fees. Repeat payouts appear to need a real trading edge.

“The First Prediction Market Prop Firm

Pass an Evaluation and get up to $100,000 to trade”

@FundingPredicts, 1,177,041 views1. A prediction market is a site for betting on the outcome of events.

“#1 Quant Prop Firm Trader 🤯 $1.8+ Million in Payouts in JUST 18 Months!”

@Wordsofrizdom, 33,274 views1. The tweet promotes a podcast episode about a guest’s trading; the quote is its opening lines.

We did not check the payout figures in the tweets1. This page judges the scheme, not the people who tweeted.

A “prop firm” sells a trading test. You pay a fee and must hit a profit target without breaking the loss limits. Pass, and you get a “funded account” and usually keep 80% to 100% of its profit37832. At the firms whose terms we read, both the test and the funded account are simulations: FTMO calls them “demo accounts with fictitious funds”7. The payouts are real money. You cannot lose more than your fees, but you can lose every fee.

The sums

One try is cheap. Topstep charges $49 to $199 a month for its standard test, and FTMO charges EUR 540 once for a $100,000 challenge with two test phases267. A minority are ever paid.

FPFX Tech data, 10 firms, reported 20241314%7%
The Funded Trader, its chief executive, 2025155% to 10%1% to 2% (worked out by the trade press from his figures)

The rows are measured differently and cannot be compared exactly. Our 17% multiplies two Topstep percentages that cover different groups2. The FPFX data is not public. We read it, The Funded Trader’s figures and the poll below only in trade press reports131415.

Payouts are small. FundedNext’s median single payout in February 2026 was $567, meaning half were smaller, and its average was $1,119, as reported in the trade press18. Topstep’s own unaudited average is $2,3004.

So the $1.8 million in 18 months said of the podcast guest is $100,000 a month, or about 43 payouts of $2,300 every month (our sums)14. That means many funded accounts at once.

What happens to most people who try

Most pay for several attempts and get no payout: about five in six starters at Topstep in 2025, on our estimate, and 93 in 100 in the FPFX data213. In that data an account spent $800 on average, typically across three challenges13.

Two thirds of people at Topstep’s funded level received no payout in 2025, though some may have been paid in other years2. With narrow exceptions, fees are not refunded: Topstep’s terms call them “final, non-cancelable, and non-refundable”543.

No firm we found publishes the share of customers who got back more than they paid. The nearest figure is a prop firm’s poll of 459 active customers: 41% said they were profitable and almost 60% said they lost money14. These are people’s own answers, and those who gave up are not in it.

The upside

Real money reaches traders, and a small group is paid repeatedly.

We found no individual income report backed by bank records, tax records or a journalist’s review.

A good first year for a competent person at a firm that publishes its figures, on our estimate: passing after a few attempts and getting one or a few payouts of roughly $570 to $3,500 each41218. Whether that beats the fees depends on how many attempts it took.

What it takes to compete

To tell early (our judgement): trade a free demo under the firm’s exact loss limits for several months, and total every fee against every payout.

Who else makes money from it

The firm. Its income is the fees. A newsletter’s reading of FTMO’s 2024 accounts puts payouts at about 55% of revenue23. So roughly half of the fees come back, to the minority who are paid.

The promoter. By our count, 23 of the 40 tweets point to a discount code, an affiliate link or a comparison site; the labels are partly inference1. FTMO pays affiliates 8% to 20% of a buyer’s first challenge11. Nothing in the terms we read ties a promoter’s pay to the follower being paid. We did not check whether any particular account quoted on this page is an affiliate.
